India is considered one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. With rapid liberalization of the Indian aviation policy, growth in air travel per capita and boom in the business/tourism sectors, the need for internationally benchmarked airports is greater than ever.
Hyderabad Airport is located around 25 kms from Hyderabad city. Built to the capacity of 40 million passengers per annum, the Airport is designed to handle New Large Aircrafts (NLA), including the Airbus A380. The modular design of the airport will allow incremental expansion of each area, without major rebuilding or operational disruption.
The city of Hyderabad is a natural aviation hub, owing to its strategic location on the map of India. It is connected to all major Indian airports within two hours flying time. Internationally too, Hyderabad makes an ideal transit point for flights from west to east and vice versa.

Taking advantage of the rapidly expanding Indian aviation sector and leveraging Hyderabad's strategic location, the Hyderabad airport is positioned to become an important hub on the global aviation map.
GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) is a joint venture company promoted by the GMR Group (63%) in partnership with government of India (13%), government of Andhra Pradesh (13%) and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (11%). The Company was incorporated to design, finance, build, operate and maintain a world class greenfield airport at Shamshabad, Hyderabad. The project is based on the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model and is structured on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis.
The airport which was commissioned in a record time of 31 months in March 2008, has an initial capacity of 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and 100,000 tons of cargo handling capacity per annum. The Project has the flexibility to increase capacity to accommodate over 40 MPPA and shall be developed in a phased manner.
The airport provides world-class facilities and infrastructure, in accordance with ICAO standards and practices to handle large aircraft and international traffic. RGIA is the first Indian airport to have the Airport Operations Control Centre which acts as the nerve centre for all coordination within the airport.
Located strategically at the geographical centre of India within a two hour flying time to all the major cities in India, Hyderabad is well positioned and within a five hour radius from all major cities in the Middle East and South East Asia. Thus, it has the potential to not only become one of the main air travel hubs in India, but also an important center for destination-cum-transit location for travel between the East and the West.
The modular integrated Cargo facility is spread over 14,330 sq.mts with a capacity to handle 100000 MT annually.
Adjoining is an exclusive apron to accommodate Code-F aircraft. The airport provides two Animal Quarantine Stations. The first Quarantine Station is located at the International arrivals and the second, in the Cargo Satellite Building.
RGIA has been rated the best in the world by Airports Council International (ACI) in the 5-15 million passengers category for its Airport Service Quality for 2009. The Airport has also been adjudged as the 5th best across all categories, both in the world as well as the Asia Pacific Region.
Other salient features of the Airport include an integrated terminal that offers an international experience with a local flavor, airport village with shopping arcade, 305-room business hotel located just three kilometers away from airport, conference facilities for the business traveler and integrated modern IT systems. The airport has 13 lounges including the airline lounges being operated by Air India and Kingfisher. Plaza Premium operates the country’s first airline independent lounges at both domestic and international departure concourses, offering services like business center, baggage hold with pick-up & delivery, 28 bed Nap & Shower besides spa services as well.
Retail area in the RGIA has a contemporary ambience akin to a modern duty free and paid shopping space. This is a unique and first of its kind model featuring a walk-through concept. The duty free offering at the RGIA is designed to offer and create a unique experience to the traveler of today.
RGIA is the first airport in the world to be awarded the Leadership Energy and Environment Design (LEED) silver rating for its eco-friendly design. It has also won the ‘Outstanding Concrete Structure of Andhra Pradesh’ award from the Indian Concrete Institute.
The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad is well set to establish the city prominently on the global aviation map, thereby contributing to the prosperity, growth and all round economic development of the region.

Mr. G. M. Rao - Group Chairman - GMR Group
G M Rao, 58, a mechanical engineer by profession, is the founder Chairman of GMR Group, a leading infrastructure developer in the country. The Group is well diversified and professionally managed with focus on business verticals of Energy, Urban Infrastructure and Highways including SEZ, Airports and Agri-business.
Born on July 14, 1950 in a small town of Rajam in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, G M Rao established the GMR business empire starting from a single jute mill in Rajam in 1978.
A visionary businessman, G M Rao recognised the huge business potential in entering the infrastructure space, with the opening up of the power sector in the 90s in India. Within a span of a decade, he successfully established three greenfield power plants in the country, one each in the state of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Under his guidance, the Group is now developing several power projects in various parts of the country.
G M Rao expanded the Group's presence in the infrastructure sector by leading the Group's foray into Roads, The Group has already completed two greenfield road projects and four more projects are under various stages of implementation. Realising that Airports will drive the economy in the 21st century, G M Rao spearheaded the Group's entry into the high profile airport business. Under his leadership the Group is developing the new greenfield International Airport at Hyderabad, and is modernising and restructuring the Delhi International Airport. While the new Hyderabad Airport will commence operations by March 2008, the first phase of Delhi Airport will be commissioned by 2010 in time for the Commonwealth Games.
Under G M Rao's visionary leadership, the Group bagged its first global project by winning the bid to modernise the Sabiha Gokcen International (SGA) airport at Istanbul, Turkey and also ventured into the new business sector of Urban Infrastructure. The Group will set up a 3300 acre multi-product SEZ in Krishnagiri District of Tamil Nadu.
G M Rao has today successfully established GMR Group, as one of the leading infrastructure organisations in the country. His commitment to the core infrastructure sector has resulted in the Group exiting some of the highly lucrative businesses of banking, insurance, breweries and jute. Rao was the largest shareholder in the country's leading 75-year-old private sector Vysya Bank, which has been successfully transformed into a modern technology driven and hugely successful financial enterprise. For his visionary approach and outstanding contribution to ING Vysya Bank for a period of two decades as its Director and Chairman, the Bank in September 2006 conferred on him the status and title of 'Chairman Emeritus'.
He was chosen as the 'Entrepreneur of the year' at the Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence 2006 - 07 this year. The award has been given to him in recognition of his exemplary entrepreneurial spirit and potential in breaking into the big league of top infrastructure organizations in India.
Besides infrastructure, the other focus area for the GMR Group is Agri-business. The Group already has a sugar plant in Andhra Pradesh and is coming up with another in the state of Karnataka. The existing plant provides livelihood for over 25000 farmers from 500 villages of the region in one form or the other.
With a strong desire to serve the needs of the marginalized sections and the rural society, Rao set up the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, to raise their living standards. The Foundation is active in the areas of education, health and hygiene, community development and empowerment of rural youth.
To face the challenges of tomorrow and meet the future needs of a fast developing country like India, G M Rao has laid a strong emphasis in building a transparent and system driven organization. While a set of seven core values define the GMR Group's distinct organization culture, Rao has also spearheaded a "Family Constitution" model for the group. The aim of this is to ensure a smooth transition of business from generation to generation, and enable professionals to discharge their rightful roles in the growth and development of the Group. In line with this, over a period of time, the members of the family would provide only the strategic inputs and investment needs and counseling for all the businesses and activities of the Group.
G M Rao's thrust is on combining the best of entrepreneurial spirit with a dynamic team of professional managers who work in an enabling and vibrant organisational culture, to sustain and consistently meet his vision for the Group of 'Building Entrepreneurial organisations that make a difference to society through Creation of Value'.
