GHIAL Community Service Activities

Community service activities for GHIAL started in 2005, 3 years before RGIA was operational. It is spearheaded by a team of trained social-work professionals.

Today, Varalakshmi Foundation manages intensive developmental activities in 6 villages and provides need based services to more than 23 villages surrounding RGIA.

Vision

Our vision is to provide sustainable growth and empower local communities through grass root level initiatives in education, health and vocational training.

Mandate and Coverage

With this vision as the focus, intensive activities are taken up in 6 villages, while various other extension services are spread in 23 villages around the airport. The span of activities cover the most significant areas of education, health and livelihoods, with need-based programmes being implemented in each thrust area.

A bright and deserving child reaches her potential

Samreen Fatima was born and brought up in Shamshabad Village. Her parents did not have a formal education. Samreen has four siblings. The family lives in a rented mud house in Shamshabad.

Samreen studied till Std. 4 in the Govt. Primary Urdu medium school at Shamshabad. The Gifted Children Committee spotted this bright girl and selected her for the scheme in 2008, and admitted her in GMR Chinmaya Vidyalaya.

She set her goal to become an engineer right from the start. Apart from paying for her educational expenses, GHIAL CSR supported her with additional academic support through evening tuitions, regular counseling, career guidance and support.

Samreen was enthusiastic about this opportunity and excelled in her academic performance against all the odds. After intermediate, she got a good EAMCET rank and a free seat in a reputed engineering college to pursue Mechanical Engineering. She is now in the third year of her Mechanical Engineering.

GMR Chinmaya Vidyalaya

English medium CBSE School provides affordable education for children in the vicinity. Since 2008 GMR Chinmaya Vidyalaya has been consistently scoring 100% results in 10th board exam

PROVIDES

Gifted Children Scheme

Fully funded education scholarships for under-privileged gifted children from surrounding villages. Currently, 124 students are sponsored from Kindergarten to various degree courses

Free health services to more than 300,000 people since 2006

Provides

Mobile Medical Unit (MMU)

A Mobile Medical Unit (MMU), catering to elderly (55+ age group) in the neighboring villages. Qualified doctor, pharmacist and social worker available on the ground
Free consultation and medicines to more than 800 beneficiaries every week, covers 23 villages and 20,000 treatments a year

Evening Clinics

Weekly Evening Clinics in 7 villages for all age groups covering about 800 community members with free treatment and medicines every month.

RO Plants

Two RO Water Filter plants installed at the airport rehabilitation colony & Gollapally villages, benefitting around 600 households daily

School Health Check-ups

Regular health check-ups for pre-school/ primary school children, covering around 1200 to 1500 children every year.

Nutrition Centres

Supplementary of Nutrition Centre for pregnant/lactating women in three villages. Daily food supplements to cover deficiencies in calories, iron, folic acid, etc. Health awareness sessions to more than 1500 women since 2006, Better nutrition and pre/post-natal awareness has led to more than 95% institutional deliveries, good immunization follow-up, average baby weight around 3.0 kgs.

Health Camps

Regular eye camps, general medical camps, cataract surgeries, aids for disabled etc. are organized every year.

Empowerment and Livelihoods

A residential vocational training centre for skilling school and college dropout youth through short-term, job oriented courses. The centre currently runs 11 vocational courses.

Courses are conducted with industry partnerships like Voltas, Schneider, Hero Moto Corp, Volvo, Everest Industries, Maruti Driving School etc.

Training and placement services provided to more than 10000 candidates since 2006 with 89% settlement rate.

EMPOWER (Enabling Marketing of Products of Women Entrepreneurs) initiative provides income-generation training for women in tailoring, specialized training in making jute products, uniform stitching, bag making, chocolate making, etc. We also undertake office sales, bulk orders for conferences, seminars and have an online store. The turnover in the 2018 financial year was Rs 70 lakhs, benefiting hundreds of women and artisans.

Employee Engagement in CSR Activities

The GMR Group since inception encouraged its employees to contribute personal time, attention and effort towards community development and social causes.
GHIAL CSR Department organizes social activities to engage GHIAL employees in many activities for community development.
Social Volunteering Projects (SVP) scheme of GMR group provides an opportunity for GMR employees/families to play an active role in socially responsible community activities. Employees are invited to form volunteer groups to participate and implement any social project of their interest in a location and community of their choice.
