GMR Hyderabad International Airport Bags Prestigious Golden Peacock Environment Management Award, 2015

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL) has been declared as the winner of ‘Golden Peacock Environment Management Award (GPEMA)’ for the year 2015 for having attained significant achievements in the field of Environment Management at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA). Shri Prakash Javadekar, Hon’ble Minister of Environment & Forests and Climate Change (I/C), Govt. of India presented this coveted award to Mr. Manish Sinha, Chief Operating Officer, GHIAL today, during the ‘17th World Congress on Environment Management' organized at Delhi in the presence of distinguished gathering of business leaders. Also present, during the award ceremony on the stage, were: The Rt. Hon. Baroness Verma, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for International Development, Govt of UK; Justice M N Venkatachaliah, National Chairman, Institute of Directors and former Chief Justice of India; and Mr. Veera Rao B., Environmental Manager, GHIAL.

The Awards Jury under the Chairmanship of Justice (Dr.) Arijit Pasayat, former Judge, Supreme Court of India, former Chairman, Competition Appellate Tribunal of India & Authority for Advance Ruling (Customs, Central Excise & Service Tax) selected GHIAL for this award. Speaking on this accomplishment, Mr. SGK Kishore, Chief Executive Officer, GHIAL, said, “RGIA is one of the major hubs in South & Central India and the first Greenfield airport to be built and operated on a public private partnership model. Over the years we have adopted several green practices and have received prestigious Awards such as ACI Level-3(Optimization) Airport Carbon Accreditation, we are also the first airport in Asia to be awarded the Leadership Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Silver Rating for its ecofriendly design. The Golden Peacock Award for Environment Management is in recognition for various green initiatives implemented at RGI Airport, Shamshabad. The award affirms our commitment towards environment sustenance.”

The other notable organizations which have won this award this year include: Tata Motors Ltd., Yes Bank Ltd., Afcons Infrastructure Ltd., Infosys Ltd., Tata Steel Ltd., ONGC, IOCL, NTPC Ltd., JK Tyre & Industries Ltd., etc.

The Golden Peacock Awards were set up by the Institute of Directors (IOD), India, in 1991 to bring out the best in the corporates/organizations through competition. Golden Peacock Environment Management Award evaluates and recognizes the best Environment practices adopted by the organization in the industry.

This year, Golden Peacock Awards received over 469 responses across the various categories of institutional awards, including the Golden Peacock Environment Management Award (GPEMA) from corporates including SMEs, public, private and government enterprises. A total of 245 applications were short-listed after careful scrutiny for final selection through a 3-tier assessment process. The applicant scoring the highest among each of the respective industrial sectors, were recommended to the jury for the final selection and approval. GHIAL emerged as applicant scoring the highest among all organizations of its sector – Transportation (Aviation).
