Hyderabad, 15th June 2018: GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL), which operates Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad, announced that it has set up seven Cardiac Emergency Resuscitation Stations (ERS), under its signature programme - #PassengerIsPrime. This arrangement has been made in a bid to provide immediate assistance to any passenger or visitor hit by sudden cardiac arrest. These stations have been set up at strategic locations across the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) - two at the domestic Security Hold Area (SHA), one each at international SHA, check-in area, domestic arrivals, international arrivals and the airport village.
Cardiac arrest happens, when heart stops beating. With this disruption, the heart halts pumping blood to the brain, lungs and other vital organs, often leading to death of the person within minutes in absence of timely CPR or defibrillation. However, cardiac arrest can be reversed if treated within a few minutes. Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) done by hand or using Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can help in reviving the affected person. An AED is a portable device that checks the heart’s rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to restore a normal rhythm.
Highly focused on passenger safety, Hyderabad Airport is now prepared for any cardiac emergency. Each Cardiac Emergency Resuscitation Station at the airport has an Automated External Defibrillator, an Emergency Bag with Intubation; Suction & other essential equipment, an Oxygen Cylinder, well-equipped first aid kit and a stretcher all packed inside the compact cabinet. During cardiac emergency, a trained staff can access the ERS box and provide treatment to the patient. Regular trainings are being imparted to the airport community members to operate the Cardiac ERS. As of now over 100 volunteers from across the stakeholders in the airport has been trained for operating AED and providing CPR in case of any emergency. Recently, one crash cart has also been introduced loaded with life-saving equipment near the domestic arrivals’ baggage conveyor belt to address any medical exigency.
The airport also has a 24X7 medical center with 17-bed emergency treatment center, which is operated by Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited. The center has well-trained doctors, paramedics and pharmacy available round the clock. There are three ambulances fitted with advanced life-saving equipment available within the airport premises round the clock. Apollo Medical Center provides regular trainings to the airport staff and stakeholders on life saving measures.
Under its ‘Passenger is Prime’ programme, Hyderabad International Airport has been leading passenger focussed initiatives involving the active participation and support of the entire Hyderabad Airport community. Some of the key initiatives under this programme included - a unique security express check area for the domestic passengers traveling only with hand baggage; Vertilift at domestic Arrivals for senior citizens and passengers with reduced mobility, among others.
